Presenting at Utah County Job Club Tomorrow

April 20th, 2010

I’m presenting at the Utah County Job Club tomorrow on how recruiters view your resume.  This event is held in the North meeting room of the East Bay Cafe on the Novell campus. Novell* graciously donates this space for the club’s use to the community. Come and see what “recruiter blinders” are and how your carefully hand-crafted resume actually looks from my eyes (hint: I don’t see what you see)

Also, check out/join the Job Club community on LinkedIn. If you can’t come tomorrow (or you might), at least participate in the conversation and share what you know!

Directions to the Meeting

The Utah County Job Club meets every Wednesday at 8am-9am at East Bay Cafe, the Novell Cafeteria. There is no fee to be a part of the group and you’re welcome to buy something to eat at the East Bay Cafe. This group is about providing a place where job seekers can connect to support each other and learn about effective job searching.

Address/Directions:
1800 South Novell Place
Provo, UT 84606

Parking available on the south end of the campus – near the large main building H. Walk along the west side of Bldg H back to the East Bay Cafe (you’ll see a large orange sign). The meeting is held in the conference room on the far north end of the cafeteria area.

In the mean-time, here’s how to write the perfect resume. (finally!) Also a post of mine on adjusting your LinkedIn profile to act like a resume,  and below is a great SlideShare presentation called “Resume Zen” by Chris Ferdinandi over at EMC Career Services.  I’m too ADD to listen to the audio track without skipping here and there, but I agree with the content!

EVENT: Speaking on Mid-Career Development at PLUG Wed. 8-7

August 7th, 2007

Provo Linux User's Group

Wednesday this week, I am speaking on Mid-Career Development at the Provo Linux User’s Group, which meets at United Online in Orem (directions, etc).

Date: Wednesday Aug 8, 2007
Time: 7:30 PM
Location: United Online

PLUG:
This month we have a unique guest presenter coming to PLUG. Robert Merrill from SOS Technical is coming to address the group. Robert is the Technical Account Manager for Utah county. He will be discussing mid-career development, including:

  • What are recruiters good for?
  • Why are recruiters HATED? (Open source-style feedback loop).
  • Careering.
  • How to be irreplaceable (protect yourself against layoffs).

Robert has a background as a programmer and web developer. Like many of us he was caught in the dot-com burst. Frustrated with recruiters that undervalued his position and never got him a job, Robert set out to tackle the way business was done. Come take advantage of this unique opportunity that may significantly change your career. Bring your suggestions regarding Open Source and technical recruiting in our area. Come learn the secrets of salary negotiation and more. See you there!!

NUPM:
6:30pm – Meeting details were not returned in time, but if you’re a monger you instinctively know where to be and when. If not, just follow the camel.

I am looking forward to the chance to talk about the frustrations I’ve had on the candidate’s side of the recruiter’s desk, and how I would do it all differently today, if I could.

I am also enjoying the feedback I am getting on Why Geeks Hate Recruiters (which is still open for comments, please!)

Re: Mormon Guy to Internet: Shut Up and Think A Minute

May 11th, 2007

Religion on Southpark

This is a serious departure for me, and for the context of this blog, but I can’t help but forward on a link to Ken Jenning’s recent open letter to the media-consuming world to just take a breather and think for a second when it comes to the next Mormon joke heard ’round the Late Night Talk Show table, or passed off as humor in your stream of media consumption.

Jennings, well-known for his stint on Jeopardy!, poses some serious questions to the would-be humorists and trying-to-be-serious journalists trying to defend the world against Mormon religious beliefs. Of course, the whole read is worth your 30-second click through, but here’s a few stinging points I want to highlight:

Maybe its just the general rudeness of the Internet age, but it seems like knowing sneers and pot-shots at Mormonism are actually becoming a currency of cool now. Did Jon Krakauers Under the Banner of Heaven, which puzzlingly portrays the mild-mannered Mormon West as a seething American underbelly of violence and fundamentalism, start this off? Was it the South Park episode? (Thats Mormon founder Joseph Smith at left in the picture above.) Or Big Love?

But substantive political argument [against actual Mormon theology] in these [critical journalistic] pieces is rare. Instead, otherwise rational people have straight-facedly taken the position that LDS theology itself is too outlandish to deserve any respect whatsoever. Religious discrimination is wrong, sure, and people should be allowed to believe what they want. Unless youre Mormon, of course. Eww. Theyre just weird.

Look, I dont expect opinion writers to write about the LDS church, or any religion not their own, from a believers point of view. That wouldnt make sense. But you dont get any class points in my book for turning somebodys sacred beliefs into punchlines just to jazz up your prose.

…here are a few points of advice to the would-be basher:

  1. After you get off a particularly good zinger at those gullible Mormons, try recasting your sentence so it refers to those gullible Jews or Catholics or Muslims. If, Wonkette, you think Mormon temple garments should be called magic underwear throughout your post, try substituting magic beanie for yarmulke or magic Nilla wafer for Communion host in a similar context and considering whether thats journalism, or whether thats even funny anymore. If youre horrified by the result, its because bigotry is bigotry, no matter the target. Mormons are no strangers to religious discriminationafter all, Missouri had its 1838 extermination order against Mormons on the books until 1976. Discrimination against Mormons isnt any more of a laughing matter than anti-Semitism, anti-Islamic feeling, or any other religious prejudice…

Utah Tech Radio — Episode 2 March 22, 2006

March 22nd, 2006

Today's show was a lot of fun to put together. We rant and rave about some of the tech news, with a particularly nerdy look at DRM–Digital Right Management and why Rob doesn't like Sony too much these days.

Follow-up: Salt Lake ColdFusion User Group

February 22nd, 2006

Earlier this month, I had a great opportunity to speak with the Salt Lake ColdFusion User Group about the current job-market in Utah. I appreciated the group and felt that I learned at least as much as I shared.

They are a great group of developers, passionate about ColdFusion application development, new technologies, learning new skills and development methodologies, and sharing what they’ve learned with others.

I also fielded some excellent questions, along with some interestingly pointed feedback about how developers feel about recruiters (which, in part, prompted this post).

Overall, I will venture to say to the community, that there is a vibrant and growing group of ColdFusion developers in our valley, and they are really doing very cool, very solid development.

Thanks for letting me share!
