Nine Ways to Ruin A Job Interview

February 23rd, 2010

He threatens to keep singing until we hire him.Ask A Manager posts nine ways you can easily ruin a job interview.  I should just tweet a random number every once in a while and link to this post whenever someone uses one of these on me.  …but, then again it may be happening so frequently, I’d be going all Robert Scoble on everyone.

Here’s the nine for those of you who can’t click the link (my content is too engaging, I know):

  1. Pretend you have no weaknesses.
  2. Share too much personal info.
  3. Answer your cell phone
(is tweeting ok? “In middle of bizoring job interview. Not sure I liek this biz, but teh marble bathroom are l33t!”).
  4. Ask questions about the company that could have easily been answered with a modicum of research.
  5. Badmouth an old boss.
  6. Be as quiet as possible.
  7. Don’t ask any questions.
  8. Interrupt.
  9. Don’t think beyond your desire to get a job offer.

The point is, you aren’t prepared for a job interview until you’re actually prepared for a job interview.  Get someone to ask you the hard questions. You know, the ones you don’t want people bringing up.  Your first two answers are wrong. Your third one might begin to be honest. The one you should say is one you can feel good about saying and not have to remember too hard. Here’s a few starter questions. (Please add your own in the comments!) :

  • So, you’ve been out of work for 17 months now… how’s that going?
  • What do you really want out of your career?
  • It seems this job is pretty different than what you’ve done in the past… why do you want to do this?
  • If you were a candy bar, what would you be? (just kidding!  Please don’t practice answering this. It means the interviewer’s only training was the “1 minute (hiring) manager for dummies”
  • What would your last boss tell me about you if she was being completely honest?
  • Why should I hire you?

In the comments, what questions have you ever been asked that totally caught you off-guard

    Listen To Your Coach

    September 5th, 2008

A friend asked me last night for some advice in his job situation.  He’s been there only a short time, and interested in long-term salary increases and other promotions, etc. He was, in effect, asking me how and when to negotiate your next moves within a company.

    How to do this?

    LISTEN TO YOUR COACH

Your “coach” in this sense is your best advocate. They want you to win.

My usage of the term here comes from the Miller-Heiman sales training series where a “coach” is defined as a certain individual of particular influence in the “buying” process… here, the so-called sale is you-being-promoted.

The unique and very special role of a Coach is to guide you to your particular sales objective by leading you to the other Buyers (people with other types of influence on the decision) and by giving you information that you need to position yourself effectively with each one… Your Coach’s focus is on helping you make this sale. [The New Strategic Selling by Robert B. Miller and Stephen E. Heiman, p. 68-69]

The point is, find the person in your organization who wants most for you to win, and can introduce you to the other people who will ultimately make the decisions about your promotion, etc… the “buyers”.

    Your coach might be:

    • Your boss
    • Your CEO
    • The CEO’s admin
    • Your recruiter
    • An outside consultant
    • Another team’s director
    • The receptionist

When you determine who your coach is, ask for their time. Buy them lunch if you need to get them offsite, and let them know what you’re trying to accomplish and ASK FOR THEIR HELP and ADVICE.

Note: Make sure to give them the opportunity to back out. Coaching doesn’t work when they don’t really want YOU to win THIS promotion. If this backfires on them–if they even sniff that in the air–they will run from you like you have the plague.

Finally, remember the COACH watches from the sidelines. Strategy and Timing. YOU have to EXECUTE. Nobody ever blamed a coach when the receiver fumbled the ball. Don’t forget your part… execution.

    Advice for Wannabe Recruiters

    January 25th, 2008

A colleague new to my company sent me a nice note asking about what words of wisdom I might have. I don’t know about that, but if you’re starting out or considering recruiting, here’s my advice:

    Start with Heart:

Yeah, this sounds so Pollyanna, but think about how much a career means to a person. Their definition of themselves, their relationships with others, and their self-esteem, largely are a function of how they feel about their job. If you don’t LOVE the chance you have every day to change someone’s WHOLE LIFE, you either need to change your focus, or change jobs.

Don’t be in recruiting if you don’t love it. You will permanently hurt yourself and others along the way.

Fake it Till You Make it:

There’s no room “on stage” for tears or fear. Smile. Take responsibility. Arrive first, leave last. Say thank you. Work out often. Volunteer in your offtime for spiritual and emotional renewal. Read books or listen to audiobooks on personal development. Spend ZERO energy on problems out of your control (like anything on the news). Define your own future and make it happen.

“The Bigger the Problem, the Bigger the Check” (Mark Hughes).

The trials we face daily are the makings of the opportunities we’ll be grateful for tomorrow.

Good Luck! Be true, work hard, and you’ll be fine.
