Listen To Your Coach

September 5th, 2008

A friend asked me last night for some advice in his job situation.  He’s been there only a short time, and interested in long-term salary increases and other promotions, etc. He was, in effect, asking me how and when to negotiate your next moves within a company.

How to do this?

LISTEN TO YOUR COACH

Your “coach” in this sense is your best advocate. They want you to win.

My usage of the term here comes from the Miller-Heiman sales training series where a “coach” is defined as a certain individual of particular influence in the “buying” process… here, the so-called sale is you-being-promoted.

The unique and very special role of a Coach is to guide you to your particular sales objective by leading you to the other Buyers (people with other types of influence on the decision) and by giving you information that you need to position yourself effectively with each one… Your Coach’s focus is on helping you make this sale. [The New Strategic Selling by Robert B. Miller and Stephen E. Heiman, p. 68-69]

The point is, find the person in your organization who wants most for you to win, and can introduce you to the other people who will ultimately make the decisions about your promotion, etc… the “buyers”.

Your coach might be:

  • Your boss
  • Your CEO
  • The CEO’s admin
  • Your recruiter
  • An outside consultant
  • Another team’s director
  • The receptionist

When you determine who your coach is, ask for their time. Buy them lunch if you need to get them offsite, and let them know what you’re trying to accomplish and ASK FOR THEIR HELP and ADVICE.

Note: Make sure to give them the opportunity to back out. Coaching doesn’t work when they don’t really want YOU to win THIS promotion. If this backfires on them–if they even sniff that in the air–they will run from you like you have the plague.

Finally, remember the COACH watches from the sidelines. Strategy and Timing. YOU have to EXECUTE. Nobody ever blamed a coach when the receiver fumbled the ball. Don’t forget your part… execution.

GO, FIGHT, WIN!

Compare Salaries By Location

September 27th, 2006

I am still jiving over Indeed’s new tool for Salary Search.

I was just mashing up some results when I realized the tool nicely allows comparison of salary among localities, or globally (as far as Indeed’s system is concerned, anyway).

I started comparing my local market (Utah) to the Indeed global market, not suprized to find us deflated in comparison.

Then, for each job keyword, I added “Indiana”, where I grew up and cranked out the results, honestly quite suprized that Utah still ranked lower than Indiana, given that our overall economies would try and say that Utahns are in higher demand than hoosiers.

Here’s the results:

I wonder how that works…

Salary Comparison Tool

September 27th, 2006

Ever since I heard about Indeed, I have been a fan. Aggregated jobs search results in one place–alerts by email or RSS/XML.

Back in April, I bumped into their Job Trends tool and I analyzed six hot job categories to see their frequency in the indeed job-posting world:

  1. Engineer
  2. Customer Service
  3. Sales
  4. Receptionist
  5. part time
  6. Human Resources

Now, Indeed has launched a Salary Comparison tool which attempts to show how much certain jobs are paying. I tagged the same six keywords as-above, and got the following salary results:

Nice job, indeed. Queue McDonalds’ theme music because …I’m lovin’ it.

New All Jobs Search

July 20th, 2006

Of course, I like to promote the jobs I am hiring for, but in the spirit of Web2.0, mashable content, and trying to exhibitlovecat-like tendencies (and because I think it’s cool that I can do this), I had created a long time ago a search tool to help job-seekers get in touch with any and all jobs they may be interested in. There are some ads along the page edges to offset hosting costs (and, I think google ads provide good, relevant options for web-surfers). Of course, don’t click them unless you want to of your own free-will and choice!

Well, thanks to the folks at indeed and some other cool PHP wizardry I’ve picked up over many long nights on my laptop, I am proud to present the new-and-improved, organically-grown, web 2.0-compliant, (insert marketing jargon here)all-jobs search tool!

You can search for jobs here in Utahor jobs in Californiaor Iowa. Move to Hawaii; retire in Florida, live it up in New York, Boston or Chicago. Whatever you want.
