Doing my Monday Morning “Network Administration” today, I realized that LinkedIn now has a store so you can buy t-shirts, pens, bags and some pretty cool hats/jackets with the LinkedIn logo on it.
But….
In the age of web2.0, mashups and personalization, I admit that while I like the stuff, and I would probably wear one of those hats or a fleece if it was given to me (how many friends do I need to get one?), I don’t think I would BUY one unless it had something personalized on it, like my LinkedIN URL: linkedin.com/in/robertmerrill
Maybe they’re going to that soon, but I’d prefer a bag or jacket with some connection information on it, rather than just LinkedIn’s logo. Afterall, the point of self-promotion if you’re going to do it, is to promote yourself, not the network.
Can I get a tee-shirt that says “Bookmark me” with all the little social-networking icons on it?

The MilitantGeek had some thoughts on the LinkedIn store back in November:
“It’s as if LinkedIn woke up one morning and thought it could win back some cool points lost to other social networks like Facebook or Bebo by opening a frickin’ T-Shirt shop. What’s next in the misguided attempts for Web 2.0 credibility - the LinkedIn Segway?”

@Matthew I am still laughing at that post.
You’re exactly right that it makes little sense other than a way to see what I want the LinkedIn sales guy to bring me if/when/ever I get pitched by them.
Excellent use of the word ‘cajones’ as well, IMO.
I agree, it would be really cool if you could get customized LinkedIn merchandise.
