Building Blog Traffic

Disclaimer:

  • I am NOT an “A” List Blogger.
  • I have yet to get an all-expense paid junket to Bali in exchange for dropping someone’s name in a blog-post.

But, I have built a fairly stable set of blogs and traffic to them (some of them) and it’s not that hard to do, if you “get it”. I emailed some tips to Dave Mendoza (LinkedInjunkie andblogger atSix Degrees from Dave)the other day and have already told a few people about them as well and figured (duh!) I should blog it, too. So, here are my unsolicited tips on building consistent blog traffic:

Consistent traffic is a long-tail kind of a thing. The keys I have found are simple:

  • Blog only about stuff meaningful to you.
Hone your focus around a set of topics, but don’t be afraid to let ‘er rip when you’re fired up about something.
  • Answer only SOME of the questions.
Nobody comments on a blog post where everything is “finished”. Give them something to arguewith you about.
  • Take sides (see above).
Start your blog post (or comment on someone else’s post) with “I don’t agree with…”
  • Comment-A-Lot
Leaving short, meaningful comments on five other people’s blog posts may be better than writing one of your own.
  • Links:
    - Lots of links IN your posts (to your and other people’s posts) will trace people back to you.
    - Lots of links TO your blog from other people and websites.

Now, after I sent this, I realized that this assumes that your blog has been submitted to (and is being indexed by) Google, Technorati, and all the Ping-O-Matic family of websites.

What have YOU done to build your blog’s traffic?

  1. Oh, I forgot the very final step.

Repeat this formula over and over…. again and again and again. This won’t be boring if you don’t miss step number one.
