I think this is an excellent move by the Department of Homeland Security:
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced a 45-day timeframe in which no sanctions will be placed on employers who accept I-9’s from applicants who lack appropriate identification due to being displaced by Hurricane Katrina. In many cases Social Security Administration and other governmental agencies are providing evacuees with proper documentation to assist them in finding work, etc.
Of course, this does not mean anybody can get work without proper authorization, but for victims of the hurricane and floods of Katrina, I believe this is an excellent move.
See the Press Release for more details.
