Yesterday, someone asked me what we do here at SOS Technical and our sister organization SOS Staffing. I explained that we work hard to provide local employers with the best options available to them for effectively finding, evaluating and hiring great people. I said that could include temporary/contract services, payroll services, contract-to-permenent services, or simply direct-placement services.
Their reply to me was, “That sounds like a great deal for employers, being able to see if people work out before they commit to hiring them long-term.”
Of course, I agree.
Here’s a model that a production company in Spanish Fork, Utah uses that I would like to encourage more companies to consider as they’re looking for valuable human resources:
- We bring 10 temporary workers to their facility that we’ve pre-screened, drugscreened, skill and background-checked.
- They work them for a few shifts
- They hire the one(s) they like best, that have the work-ethic, and that fit the environment or culture.
- They repeat, until all positions are filled.
A few benefits I see here is that:
- No productivity is lost by the management team — we do all the searching, phone calls, interviews, and screening (including testing and background checks, etc)
- No productivity is lost on the floor — nobody is getting piled up with work because of a lack of help.
- Even the best-looking resumes or interviewers will work or act differently when they really have to perform. I like to think of this process as an on-the-job interview. (Gee, isn’t that what The Apprentice is all about?)
Some people will look at this and scoff–”What about all those expenses to pay the contractors you didn’t hire?” To which I would simply reply, “It has to be cheaper than the expenses of hiring just one person that turns out to be a miserable failure.”
“An ounce of prevention…“
